Employment Prospects in Restaurant and Food Service:

Demand for these managers is largely dependent on consumer spending, which is expected to remain strong. In addition, growth in the population of elderly people will result in a growing demand for food service manager jobs in residential care facilities and supportive care services.

Mangers are usually hired from within the establishment through the promotion of existing staff. Use of computerized ordering systems and inventory control systems will continue to increase. Managers will need to be familiar with these systems. Also, employers are stressing the need for teamwork, communication, planning and organizing skills.

Career opportunities can be found in: food service management in health care, long term care and commercial facilities; food and equipment sales; nutrition education and in nutrition counseling for wellness. Food industry positions can be found in: quality assurance; product development; food inspection and in food production.
